Divergent by Veronica Roth
I bought this book from an app iBooks. A well written, heart-pounding and brilliant book that kept me on edge, I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough. The beginning was a little slow for me, entertaining, but really slow. Its like it took a really long time to get going. I enjoyed this the entire time I read it.
First 200 pages took time to understand where the story was going, the world to be built, characters has to be introduced. Then the goose bump action packed was going to happen. It started off with the aptitude tests and choosing the ceremony, Beatrice was one of the very few who has what is called, Divergent, and to avoid death nor let anyone know what she has, she picked one faction, Dauntless.
I like Beatrice, the main character of the book. She was strong, but she also had insecurities and that came from the faction she was from. The different friendships of hers grow and how she questions who were her true friends. She definitely grew as a character over the length of this book. Four was an interesting character too, he has a detachment to him but eventually you will see him warm up to Beatrice. He is a good person but he has a lot to deal with about his past. Beatrice and Four’s relationship grew stronger at the end, the more she gets to know him and realized she liked him and he liked her. They kissed! I really like that at the end, how they reflect that they loved each other. It was a sweet ending to a dramatic ending. There were a lot of characters, and so many emotions and fear, I was either rooting for them or crying and hoping that, Roth the writer, would kill them off! I was really impressive with how Roth introduced each characters. As Four mentioned that selflessness and bravery are not that different, he was right. I never thought about that and when suicide was brought that it was not an act of bravery but an act of cowardice. Its similar to how the characters in The Hunger Games coped, they were not that much of a difference in scenarios. There were constant hopes.
Its really good book, and I will be recommending it to my friends. I can’t wait to get my hands on the second book, Insurgent, to find out what happens to these characters next.
